Seven types of water-using and water-saving products are regulated under the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme.
Before you can supply these products or offer them for supply in Australia, there are important requirements you must meet or you may be issued with penalties under the WELS Act.
Make sure you are aware of:
- products that are regulated under the WELS scheme
- requirements for testing, labelling and displaying these products as detailed in Australian Standard 6400:2016.
Products regulated under the scheme are fully detailed in Section 6 of the Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards Determination (No.2).
The WELS scheme excludes second-hand or used products and products imported into Australia for personal use.
Includes tap equipment used over a fixed basin, sink or laundry tub.
Excludes:
- bidet taps
- tap equipment that is for use exclusively over a bath or spa
- taps that are part of an appliance (such as a chilled or boiling water dispenser)
- thermostatic taps.
Includes showers that are fixed and used exclusively for personal bathing.
Excludes:
- emergency deluge showers
- safety showers.
Includes electric dishwashers intended for household use.
Includes electric clothes washing machines intended for household use and combination clothes washing machine dryers that use water to dry a load.
Includes all lavatory equipment that uses water:
- cisterns
- flushing devices
- pans
- toilets.
Includes urinal equipment that uses water and associated flushing devices.
Includes flow controllers when they are:
- for use in any tap equipment, shower, dishwasher or clothes washing machine that is a regulated product
- offered for supply separately from the product (whether or not they are also offered for supply as a component of the product).
